How to Prep for Spray Tan: The Do’s and Don’ts Before Your Appointment

You want your skin to glow, not streak, blotch, or fade unevenly. But the truth is, the difference between a sunless tan that lasts beautifully and one that turns patchy in 24 hours comes down to how well you prep your skin before the appointment.

A flawless spray tan isn’t just about the formula or technique (though that matters too). It’s about timing, skin prep, and knowing what not to do. At Zen Afterglow, we spend just as much time educating clients about how to prep for spray tan success as we do perfecting the application itself. Because prep isn’t optional; it’s the foundation for the glow you want.

2. The Night Before Your Tan: Set the Foundation

Exfoliate But Don’t Overdo It

The night before your spray tan appointment, you’ll want to remove any surface build-up so the tanning solution can go on evenly. That means exfoliation, but gently.

Skip anything abrasive or overly aggressive. Instead:

  • Soften your skin first with a warm shower or bath; aim for 5 to 10 minutes before exfoliating.
  • Use an exfoliating mitt, not a sugar scrub. You want to buff away dead skin, not irritate it.
  • No mitt? Mix baking soda with water for a DIY paste and gently rub it over the skin.
  • Focus on dry-prone areas like elbows, knees, ankles, and feet.

Shave The Night Before

Shaving removes surface oils and fine hair that can block even application. Shave the night before, never right before your appointment. You’ll give your skin time to settle and reduce the risk of post-shave sensitivity.

Spray tan stickers, like this butterfly, are a fun way to check how well your tan develops. If your skin isn’t exfoliated properly or prepped right, this contrast wouldn’t be nearly as sharp.

Moisturize Leading Up, Not the Day Of

Hydrated skin holds a tan better, but the moisturizer needs to be in your system before your appointment. Apply lotion daily for several days leading up to your tan, focusing again on dry-prone areas.

Big mistake: exfoliating the morning of your appointment, or skipping it entirely. Over-exfoliation can leave your skin irritated; under-exfoliation creates an uneven canvas.

3. What NOT to Do Before Your Tan

Here’s your absolute-no list; habits that sabotage even the best tan.

  • No deodorant (can oxidize and turn green)
  • No makeup (acts as a barrier)
  • No body lotion, perfume, or oil-based products
  • No waxing or sugaring the day of your appointment
  • No pedicures day-of
  • No tight clothing (rub marks = streaks)

If you’re planning a waxing or sugaring appointment, make sure it’s 24–48 hours prior to your spray tan to let the follicles calm down.

Day of the Appointment: Simple, Clean, and Dry

By the time you walk through the doors of Zen Afterglow, your skin should be clean, calm, and product-free.

Here’s your checklist:

  • Shower the night before or at least 12 hours before your appointment
  • No deodorant, perfume, makeup, or lotion on the skin
  • Wear your hair up
  • Dress loose: Think oversized tee, maxi dress, or nightgown, anything flowy and dark

You’ll leave with bronzer on your skin, and the last thing you want is for it to rub off into weird patterns because of seams, straps, or elastic waistbands.

Tight straps leave marks, even if you’ve prepped perfectly. Opt for a strap-free option or very loose clothing for flawless coverage.

Zen Afterglow’s Signature Glow

We offer a few different spray tanning options, but our go-to for brides, parties, and clients who want it done right is:

Norvell Venetian Rapid Tan (aka Signature Glow)

  • Violet + brown bronzers create a deep, natural-looking tan
  • Perfect for all skin tones; no orange undertone
  • Develops in as little as one hour (yes, really)
  • Ideal for last-minute events, bridal showers, or photoshoots

Tight straps leave marks, even if you’ve prepped perfectly. Opt for a strap-free option or very loose clothing for flawless coverage.

Sticker applied before tan application; no visible contrast yet. This is immediately post-tan, before full development.

24 hours later: the Signature Glow has fully developed. The kiss-mark contrast clearly shows how even and rich the final result is.

Tight straps leave marks, even if you’ve prepped perfectly. Opt for a strap-free option or very loose clothing for flawless coverage.

After the Appointment: Don’t Let It Go to Waste

You made it through prep and the tan itself, but now’s the time to protect your investment.

Here's how:

  • No water, rain, sweating, or steam for 3 to 12 hours (depending on your solution)
  • Wait until the recommended time to shower, early rinse = uneven fade
  • Use only your hands and lukewarm water for your first rinse (no loofahs or scrubs)
  • Moisturize daily starting the next day
  • Avoid exfoliating or using acids for several days post-tan
  • Gently pat skin dry; don’t rub with towels

We cover more about post-treatment care in this blog on facial aftercare; many of the same rules apply to spray tanning.

Special Occasion or Group Booking? Read This

If you’re tanning for a wedding, girls’ trip, holiday event, or any group event, we can help.

Zen Afterglow offers private bookings and group sessions, but please give 2–4 weeks’ notice for staffing and licensing. Yes, we can include:

  • Licensed events
  • Snacks
  • Curated experiences for your group
  • Group tan prep timelines (we’ll help coordinate your wax/facial/spray tan schedule for best results)

You’ll still need to follow the same prep rules, but we’ll make it easy. Just mention the occasion when booking, and we’ll tailor the experience for your group.

Want to pair it with lash lifts or brows? We can time those, too.

Final Call to Glow

Your skin deserves better than a patchy tan. When you prep right, it shows in your confidence, your glow, and your photos.

If you’re booking a spray tan for a special event, or just want to feel like yourself (but bronzed), now’s the time to plan it out:

  • Exfoliate gently
  • Moisturize in the days before
  • Avoid same-day waxing, deodorant, lotion, or tight clothing
  • Show up fresh, bare, and dry

Zen Afterglow’s Signature Glow is available for individual sessions and group bookings. For brides, bachelorettes, or just a little solo pampering, let us help you glow smarter.
